Almost every pool cage in Palm Bay has a concrete deck that was sprayed with an acrylic "cool deck" texture when the pool went in, and almost every one of them is due. The good news is that resurfacing a sound deck is the cheapest big improvement a Palm Bay backyard can get; the bad news is that a lot of decks get resurfaced that shouldn't be. The test: resurface or replace?
Walk the deck barefoot and slowly. If it's level, nothing rocks, the coping joint is tight, and the problems are chalking, hairline cracks, stains, worn spots and heat — resurface. If a section has dropped toward the pool, the coping joint has opened, there are cracks you can put a coin in that shift under your foot, or the cage posts are leaning because the deck moved — an overlay will crack in the same places by next summer, and you need a foam lift first (if the slab is sound) or a replacement (if it isn't). We do this walk on every estimate and we don't sell overlays to decks that need lifting.
What's in a resurfacing job
Pressure-washing and acid-etching or grinding the old surface; grinding off any loose cool deck and feathering the edges; filling cracks and spalls; resetting loose deck drains and resealing the coping joint; a primer; the polymer-modified acrylic overlay sprayed and knocked down to a slip-resistant texture in your color; and two coats of sealer. Prep is day one, overlay day two, sealer day three; walk on it the next morning, furniture in 48 hours. Lighter colors stay coolest. At the beach, plan on resealing every two to three years; inland, three to five.
What moves the price
Size, obviously. The condition of the old cool deck — if more than a third is loose, we grind the whole deck to bare concrete and the prep doubles. Cracks and spalls. A settled section that needs foam first. Two-tone or patterned finishes, borders and a matching lanai. And access — a cage with a narrow door means hand-carrying equipment.
Common questions
How long does resurfacing last?
Ten to fifteen years on a sound deck with a reseal every few years. The path from the slider and the steps wear first and can be spot-recoated.
Can you resurface over an old cool deck?
If it's bonded, yes — cleaned, etched and primed, the new overlay bonds to it. Loose areas are ground off. If most of it is loose we take it all off.
Can I change the color?
Yes — that's most of the point. Dozens of standard colors, two-tone and borders. We bring samples; the lighter tans and grays are coolest underfoot.
Will you resurface a deck that's sunk?
Not without lifting it first. A foam lift brings the section back to grade in an hour, the coping joint gets resealed, and then the overlay goes on. Overlaying a sunk deck is throwing money at a crack.
