The walk from the driveway to the front door is the first thing a visitor steps on and the last thing the builder thought about. On the older Port Malabar and Lockmar lots it's usually a three-foot-wide ribbon, cracked by a laurel-oak root, sunk at one end and with a lip at the stoop; on the new SW builds it's a straight shot from driveway to door with nothing to soften it. City sidewalk panels are a separate job. Where Palm Bay has a public sidewalk along the frontage — the newer SW subdivisions, Bayside Lakes, the collector roads — a heaved or broken panel is in the right-of-way, and repairing or replacing it needs the Public Works permit under Code § 176.020 and has to match the city's section: four inches, broom-finished, jointed to match the run. Do I need a permit for a front walkway?
For a walk on your own lot, generally no. For a sidewalk panel in the city's right-of-way — the public sidewalk along the street — yes, under Code § 176.020, and it has to match the city's section and be inspected. We know which is which on sight and confirm with Public Works before we cut anything.
Who fixes a heaved city sidewalk in front of my house?
It depends on the street and the cause. Palm Bay maintains public sidewalks on many roads, and a panel lifted by a city street tree can be a city repair; a panel broken by your own tree, a contractor's truck or a driveway apron is usually yours. Can you make the walk match my driveway?
Yes — same finish, same edge treatment, same color if the driveway is colored, and we tie the walk into the driveway with an expansion joint so they move separately without a lip.
